Marriage Bond for Jonathan James & Polly Bandy (April 23, 1810)

Botetourt County, Virginia, Marriage Bonds for 1810, Page 11:

 

Jonathan James (1785-1843) was the sixth son of Daniel James (1750-1817) and Susanna Bealert (1745-1849) of Upper Merion Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Polly Bandy was the daughter of John Arlen Bandy (1752-1810) of Clinton, Cumberland County, Virginia and Lucy Christian (1762-1825) of Amherst County, Virginia. The two were likely married in Botetourt County, Virginia shortly after the issuance of their marriage bond dated Monday, April 23, 1810. Below is a transcript of that bond.

KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, That we

 

Jonathan James & Andrew Bandy

 

are held and firmly bound unto JOHN TYLER Esq. Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the just and full sum of One hundred and fifty Dollars current money of the United States of America, and for the payment of which well and truly to be made to the said Governor and his successors in Office for the use of the said Commonwealth, We and each of us bind ourselves, our and each of our heirs executors, and administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents.  Sealed with our Seals and dated the

 

23rd day of April 1810

 

The Condition of the above Obligation is such, that whereas there is a Marriage shortly intended to be had and solemnized, between the above bound

 

Jonathan James and Polly Bandy daughter of John Bandy of this County

 

If therefore there be no lawful cause or impediment to obstruct said marriage, then this Obligation to be void, else to remain in full force and Virtue.

Apr. 23, 1810 The above Andrew Bandy made oath in this office in Botetourt that the above Polly Bandy, his Sister, is above the age of twentyone years.
