Marriage Certificate of William George James

and Lucinda E. Whaley, July 6, 1853

Lamar County, Texas, Marriage Record Book 1, Page 83

On September 28, 2001, George Alspaugh of Columbia, Tennessee wrote: “Cousin Larry, Ruth and I have just returned from her McConnell family reunion in Bogata, Red River, Texas. Had a wonderful time, to our surprise, the McConnell family presented us with a ‘friendship’ quilt, with all attending signing their names to it. They said that this was to show their appreciation for all our work in gathering the McConnell, Privett, James and Butler family information. It was such a surprise to us and is something we will cherish for the rest of our lives. While in the area we had to do some family research. Think we solved the William George James marriage. While at the Delta County Library, Ruth was looking at a book on Lamar County Marriages and found William G. James to Lucinda E. Whaley 6th July 1853. We then went to Lamar County Courthouse in Paris, Texas and looked it up in the Marriage Record Book No. 1 and on page #83 it is listed as- (below) Our next thing to solve is how did Lucinda get from Kentucky to Texas? We asked at the courthouse if maybe this marriage certificate was still there at the courthouse and the clerk replied that ‘none of the certificates in Book No. 1 were at the courthouse, that the ones (in Book #1), that were not picked up, suddenly disappeared all at once!’ So we got the next best thing, a Xerox copy of page #83 of Marriage Record Book #1… Ruth and George Alspaugh, Columbia, TN.”
