Children of Isaac Richard James, Sr. (1797-1880) of Georgia and Elizabeth Culp (1803-1870) of Union, Newton County, Mississippi:

 

1.    William Elias James: born January 3, 1823 in Elbert County, Georgia; married September 18, 1844 in Elbert County, Georgia to Martha (Emma) Gains (1829-1912), daughter of Robert Taliaferro Gaines and Sarah Alexander; died August 28, 1881 (aged 58) in Mississippi; buried at Memorial Park in Union, Newton County, Mississippi; known children include:  Laura Elizabeth James, Thomas Alvin James, Luther Sanford James, William Marion James, John Hamilton James, Martin James, Rufus James, Levingston Martin James, Ralph Edward James, Sarah Frances Mildred James, Mary Talulah James, Martha Emma James, Donia Alice James and Delia Abby James.

 

2.    Thomas Edmund James: born August 23, 1824 in Elbert County, Georgia; married November 13, 1844 in Elbert County, Georgia to Katherine Mansfield Adams (1828-uknown), daughter of William Henry Adams (1778-1853) and Sarah K. "Sally" Head (1798-1860).

 

3.    Miriam “Emira” Elizabeth James: born February 4, 1826 in Elbert County, Georgia; married September 14, 1843 in Elbert County Georgia to Elbert Benjamine Adams (1824-1860), son of William Henry Adams (1778-1853) and Sarah K. “Sally” Head (1798-1860); died March 10, 1873 (aged 47) in Elbert County, Georgia; known children include: Dun L. Adams, William A. Adams, Mary T. Adams, Cassie S. Adams, Simon Hall Devance Adams and Joseph E. Adams.

 

4.    Martha Emily James: born April 5, 1828 in Elbert County, Georgia; married March 7, 1844 in Elbert County, Georgia to John Thomas Sayer (1813-1889), son of Robert S. Sayer and Martha Nelms; died 1920 in Madison County, Georgia; buried at Carlton City Cemetery in Carlton, Madison County, Georgia; known children include: William Oscar Sayer, Sarah Elizabeth Sayer, S.T. Sayer, Florence Lumpkin Sayer, Martha Jane Anne Sayer, John Sanford Sayer, Robert Knight Sayer, Mary Phillura Sayer, James Ewell Sayer, Susan Ida Sayer, Lora E. Sayer and Joseph Archibald Sayer.

 

5.    Isaac Richard James, Jr.: born February 23, 1830 in Elbert County, Georgia; married December 12, 1850 in Elbert County, Georgia to Lucinda Elizabeth Adams (1831-1900), daughter of William Henry Adams (1778-1853) and Sarah K. "Sally" Head (1798-1860); died October 15, 1863 in Mississippi Springs, Mississippi; known children include: Martha A. James, William Isaac James, Sarah Elizabeth James, Mary Frances James and Ausbon Augustus James.

 

6.    Maryan “Mary” Amanda James: born July 7, 1832 in Elbert County, Georgia; married October 6, 1859 in Elbert County, Georgia to James Carter Ruff (1836-1920), son of Shadrack Ruff (1799-ukn) and Martha Penn (1799-ukn). Residing in District 199 of Elbert County, Georgia in 1880; James Carter Ruff remarried on August 12, 1884 in Elbert County Georgia to Georgia Texas Bone (1854-1914); date of death between 1880 and 1884).

 

7.    Pvt. Marion Lumpkin James: born July 21, 1834 in Elbert County, Georgia; married January 3, 1858 in Elbert County, Georgia to Tabitha E. Thornton (1838-unk.); died April 26, 1865 (aged 30) as a prisoner of war; buried at Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery, Row 38, Grave 1920 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio; known children include: Francis James and Martha Emily James.

 

8.    Alven Alexander James: born February 25, 1837 in Elbert County, Georgia; married December 24, 1857 in Elbert County, Georgia to Martha Catherine Wansley (1838-1911), daughter of Fleming Wansley (1811-1895) and Rebecca Patterson (1814-1876); died May 18, 1910 (aged 73) in Elbert County, Georgia; buried at Vans Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Elberton, Elbert County, Georgia; known children include: Cassie James, Isaac James, Georgia Francis James, Mary Catherine James, Lizzie Rebecca James, Denae F. James, Mittie Sue James and Carrie Jeffie James.

 

9.    Susannah Frances James: born August 29, 1840 in Elbert County, Georgia; first marriage in 1870 to Augustus B. Johnson (1842-); second married on December 22, 1860 in Elbert County, Georgia to William C. Prather; died circa 1874; known children include: Missoury Elizabeth Johnson and Sanford Augusta Johnson.

 

10.  Sanford Augustus James: born August 12, 1842 in Elbert County, Georgia; died September 2, 1862 (aged 20) following the Battle of Vicksburg in Camp Pleasant, Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi; buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi.

Biographical Notes:

 

Isaac Richard James, Sr. (1797-1880) was the son of Elias James (c1775-c1840) of Wilmington District, North Carolina.

 

Isaac Richard James, Sr. had four sons who served the Confederacy during the Civil War including: Isaac Richard James, Jr., Marion Lumpkin James, Alven Alexander James and Sanford Augustus James. Three of his sons including Isaac Richard James, Jr., Marion Lumpkin James and Sanford Augustus James died during the War. Isaac Richard, Marion Lumpkin and Sanford Augustus all served in Company "I" of the 46th Mississippi Infantry at the Battle of Vicksburg during the Union offensive against that city by U.S. Generals Grant and Sherman.  

 

Isaac Richard James, Jr. was sent to a hospital at Mississippi Springs on September 20, 1862 and died there on October 15, 1862. Marion Lumpkin James was captured at the end of the siege of Vicksburg and later captured again at the battle of Nashville. He was imprisoned at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio and died of dysentery on April 26, 1865. He is buried in grave #1920 at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio. Sanford Augustus James became sick and died at Camp Pleasant at Vicksburg, Mississippi on September 2, 1862. Alven Alexander James survived the war and returned home to his wife and children in Elbert County, Georgia.

 

By the end of the Civil War, Isaac Richard James, Sr. and his eldest son William Elias James had resettled the family on a section of land that straddled present day North Street in Union that was then known as the Dixon community in Neshoba County, Mississippi.
