Pruitt (1846-1897) and Frances Tabitha Stallings (1846-1936); died June 19, 1966
(aged 83) in Abilene, Taylor County, Texas; buried at Breckenridge Cemetery, Breckenridge,
Stephens County, Texas; known children include: Jewell Pruitt, Ronald Joe Pruitt,
Dorothy Pruitt, Doyal Douglas Pruitt, Britton J. Pruitt, Audine Mae Pruitt, Elizabeth
Charleston “Bessie” Pruitt, William Ernest Pruitt and Wanda Pruitt.
2. Myrtle W. James: born August 25, 1886 in Texas; appears in 1900 U.S. Census
in Justice Precinct 8, Palo Pinto, Texas with family (age 14); first marriage to
U.M. Duvall; second marriage to John Britton Utley (1876-1942) son of William H.
Utley and Martha A. White; died May 20, 1964 (aged 77) in French Camp, San Joaquin
County, California; buried at Stockton Rural Cemetery, Block 14 lot 61, Stockton,
San Joaquin County, California; known children include: Rayford Britton Utley and
Clyde Bennett Utley.
3. Gentry W. James: born October 23, 1887 in Texas; appears in 1900 U.S. Census
in Justice Precinct 8, Palo Pinto, Texas with family (age 12).
4. Bessie J. James: born September 25, 1889 in Comanche County, Texas; appears
in 1900 U.S. Census in Justice Precinct 8, Palo Pinto, Texas with family (age 10);
married to Homer Napoelian Alexander (1881-1951) son of James Alexander and Nancy
McClain; died October 11, 1969 (aged 80) in Big Springs, Howard County, Texas; buried
in De Leon Cemetery, Plot B11 De Leon City, Comanche County, Texas; known children
include: Lavern Elizabeth Alexander and Gentry Woodruff Alexander.
5. Blanche James: born February 29, 1892 in Texas; appears in 1900 U.S. Census
in Justice Precinct 8, Palo Pinto, Texas with family (age 8); married Lewis Jessie
Phelps (1893-1955); died November 24, 1939 (aged 47) in Ward County, Texas; known
children include: Nevalea Phelps, Doris Phelps, Louis Dayle “Dale” Phelps and Betty
Jo Phelps.
6. Gertrude Edna James: born May 27, 1895 in Strawn, Palo Pinto County, Texas;
appears in 1900 U.S. Census in Justice Precinct 8, Palo Pinto, Texas with family
(age 5); married December 20, 1915 in Texas to Gus Preston Luethy (1887-1960), son
of Henry Edward Luethy (1848-1918) and Camby Alice Bramlette (1864-1946); died December
15, 1970 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas; buried at Monahans Memorial Cemetery,
Monahans City, Ward County, Texas; known children include: Jack Preston Luethy,
Donald Richard Luethy, Alice June Luethy and Ralph James Luethy.
7. Earnest George James: born September 27, 1898 in Palo Pinto County, Texas;
appears in 1900 U.S. Census in Justice Precinct 8, Palo Pinto, Texas with family
(age 20); not married; died March 5, 1919 (aged 20) in Ranger, Eastland County, Texas;
buried at Mount Marion Cemetery, Strawn, Palo Pinto County, Texas; no known children.
8. Estha Pearl James: born January 18, 1901 in Palo Pinto County, Texas; married
Earl Roy Stephens (1887-1949); died May 4, 1984 (aged 83) in De Leon, Comanche County,
Texas; buried at Ector County Cemetery, Odessa, Ector County, Texas; known children
include: Earl Roy Stephens, Jr.

George William James (1856-1901) was the son of William George James (1832-1908)
of Bedford County, Virginia and Lucinda Elizabeth “Betty” Whaley (1835-) of Kentucky.
Lavern Elizabeth Alexander (1909-1980), the daughter of Bessie J. James (1889-1969)
married Cecil Short, the son of Howard Short on June 15, 1929. Lavern and Cecil would
move to San Antonio, Texas in 1930. Lavern would subsequently marry Thurman Rodney
Cox (1913-1989).

Obituaries:
Bessie J. (nee, "James") Alexander (1889-1969) published in the Comanche Chief, October
17, 1969, page 11, column 1. “Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie J. Alexander, 80,
were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, October 13 in the Higginbotham Funeral Chapel at De
Leon, with Reverend Ralph Heickman, pastor of the First Baptist Church, De Leon,
officiating. Burial was in the De Leon Cemetery. Mrs. Alexander, former resident
of De Leon, died Saturday night, October 11, in Big Spring. Mrs. Alexander, who was
born September 25, 1889, was a member of the First Baptist Church. She is survived
by a daughter, Mrs. Thurman R. Cox of Andrews; two sisters, Mrs. Esta Stephens and
Mrs. Gertrude Leuthy, both of Gorman; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.”
Gertrude Edna (nee, “James”) Luethy (1895-1970) published in the San Antonio Express,
Wednesday, December 16, 1970 - "Mrs. Gertrude Luethy, 75, of Gorman, died here Tuesday
while visiting her daughter, Mrs. Frank Conaway. The Body will lie in repose in Alamo
Funeral Home until noon Thursday. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Hammond Funeral
Home in Monahans. Survivors, in addition to Mrs. Conaway, include two sons, a sister
and nine grandchildren."
